Android Statistics June 3 2013
Zoom The Android share statistics for the fortnight ending on 3 June 2013

The latest statistics on Android usage show that Google is steadily moving devices to Android "Jelly Bean" 4.1 and 4.2. 33% of Android devices are now running the most recent version of the mobile operating system with 29% running 4.1 and 4% running 4.2. Adding in Android 4.0, "Ice Cream Sandwich", and its 25.6% share means that Android 4.x is now running on 58.6% of devices.

But no single one of those versions can eclipse Android 2.3: Gingerbread is still running on 36.5% of Android devices with 36.4% of them running 2.3.3 to 2.3.7 versions. Deep in the long tail are Android "Froyo" 2.2 with 3.2%, Android "Eclair" 2.1 with 1.5% and Android "Donut" 1.6, still hanging in there with 0.1%, the same share as Android "Honeycomb" 3.2, the tablet-only edition of Android.

These numbers are collected with Google's latest data gathering rules which count visits to the Play Store, rather than just measuring check-ins with Google servers. Google switched to the new scheme at the start of April. The results are derived from data for the two weeks running up to 3 June 2013.

The screen size statistics show that the share for "large" screen devices (4.5 to 7 inches) has stayed the same, but that the "xlarge" catagory (7 to 10+ inches) has dropped slightly from 4.9% to 4.5%. "Normal" (between 3 and 4.5 inches) and "Small" (2 to 3.5 inch) devices have taken up the slack, rising to 79.9% and 10% respectively. The only other notable increase in share is that "Normal" sized displays with "xxhdpi" (very high dot per inch) resolutions now have 3.3% of the display share, up from 1.3%, which is believed to reflect the uptake of newer "Full HD" phones. Unfortunately, it is somewhat harder to derive any other information from these statistics as Android definitions of screen sizes changed with Android 3.2 to allow more precise display control.
