Developer Break

Catch up on the smaller but important notes for developers, from libraries to APIs and from people to posts. In this edition: Nokia Imaging, Perforce betas, QML for WebApps, REST for C++, Amazon SDKs and a blog about D.

Commercial tools

  • Nokia has released the beta of an imaging SDK for Windows Phone which includes the ability to partially decode JPEGs for fast previews, comes with 50 filters and effects, supports crop, resize and rotate, and has an API accessible from managed and native code. Sample projects are also available to illustrate the SDK in action.

  • Perforce 2013.2 has entered beta, while P4Eclipse (Perforce's Eclipse plugin) is now compatible with Eclipse 4.3 and Mylyn 3.9, and there's a refresh for the P4VS, the Visual Studio plugin.

Open source tools

  • Qt's QML is a powerful way of working with web layout and Lauri Paimen set out to bring that power to WebApps with QmlWeb, a JavaScript library parses QML code to create HTML5/CSS web sites. Paimen's handed the maintenance to Anton Kreuzkamp who has announced QmlWeb is now a KDE project.

  • Give it a REST, Sam. A beta of Microsoft's Casablanca 1.1 aka the Apache-licensed C++ REST SDK for Visual Studio is now out for download and brings back the HTTP Listener library.

Services and SDKs

  • More SDKs from Amazon to drive AWS – first, the AWS SDK for Java 1.5.0 upgrades the Apache HttpClient, adds closable support for S3 objects, makes datatype mapping requests easier to build, and updates the API for Elastic Transcoder's new frame rate options. Second up, Ruby developers have got an SDK update too with AWS SDK for Ruby 1.12.0, which adds a REPL for interacting with AWS, updates its Elastic Transcoder API support and deprecates some configuration options.
