GNOME plans to promote Wayland port

One of the main GNOME developers, Matthias Clasen, has proposed that efforts to port the GNOME desktop to Wayland should be given more weight. His targets: with GNOME 3.10 this autumn, the GNOME Shell should optionally work as a Wayland compositor, and the gtk backend should be mostly completed; all desktop features should then work under Wayland in GNOME version 3.12, which is scheduled for release in March 2014. Continued support for X11 applications is planned via technologies such as Xwayland; however, GNOME will also continue to run under X11 for the time being.

Integrating Wayland support into GNOME has been on the developers' agenda for a while. Clasen writes that the announcement of the Mir display server "makes it a bit more urgent that we put our weight behind Wayland and help it reach its full potential".
