Open Recall: Engelbart, APL, furniture, Korora and VirtualBox
Open Recall is a space on The H for those stories which are worth mentioning. In this edition – the Engelbart Archive, APL's origins, VirtualBox updates, Open source furniture, a Bruced-up Fedora, Jelastic's new advisor, and open source vs the tax man.
- The Internet Archive has opened a Doug Engelbart Archive to collate the many videos of, or about, the pioneer of modern computing, networking, collaboration and interaction who died at the age of 88 this week. The archive includes all three reels of Engelbart's iconic "Mother of all demos" (1, 2, 3) at the 1968 Fall Joint Computer Conference along with over 100 other videos.
- Talking about historical video, for those interested in the history of programming languages, a 1974 programme "The Origins of APL" has APL's creator Kenneth E Iverson and others influential in the mathematical programming language discussing its origins and ideas.
- VirtualBox has been updated to version 4.2.16 with fixes for Windows and Mac OS X hosts, EFI fixes for 64-bit guests on 32-bit hosts, and crashing bugs related to DVD drives corrected.
- When Mozilla set up an office in Japan, it got Nosigner to design the office and furniture. And Mozilla then got them to release the designs of some of the office elements as open source.
- Korora, the Fedora remix with many extras, has been updated to a Fedora 19 base and brings its ready installed multimedia support, Jockey device manager for video drivers, and pre-extended Firefox to users in the downloadable form of Korora 19 (Bruce).
- PHP creator Rasmus Lerdorf has joined Java and PHP cloud hosting platform maker Jelastic as an advisor.
- It wasn't just the Tea Party – open source projects were among the many different kinds of organisations that received extra scrutiny from the US tax authorities when applying for tax-free status, as a report on Wired explained. That led to Simon Phipps wondering if open source projects actually needed non-profit status.
