Selected events in the UK and elsewhere in May

The H Community Calendar presents details of the coming month's events – along with advance notification of larger events later in the year – in various open source, development, Linux, Unix and other communities, from multi-day conferences to user group get-togethers.

1st 1 May - Java - London WC1E

Who: London Java Community
What: Presentation – a talk to give the busy Java/JVM developer an insight into how to analyse and resolve common Garbage Collection problems.

2nd 2 May - PHP - London EC2A

What: PHP "PubCon" – regular monthly meeting; this month Stuart Herbert talks about "Storyplayer: bring your user and service stories to life through your tests".

4th - 5th 4-5 May - Hack Day - London SW1Y

Who: Rewired State
What: Follow the Data Hack Day – a two-day hack day for a small number of developers who will be paid to hack global extractives data (including oil and gas industries) with the aim of creating a demand for easily understood data and to showcase the benefits of open, interactive and accessible extractives data.

7th 7 May - Java - London EC1V

What: Presentation – Akmal B. Chaudhri (a developer advocate at IBM UK) will be talking about "Considerations for using NoSQL technology on your next IT project".

2013 Scottish Ruby Conference – the premier European Ruby/Rails Conference, now in its fifth year. Two days of sessions of interest to Rubyists.

What: Regular monthly meetup – after "DCI with Ruby & Rails" from Dawid Skłodowski, and one other talk (to be determined), the meetup will continue in informal fashion in the pub.

What: London user group meeting – talks on Jira administration tips as well as hearing from one of the group who has had experience rolling out the Atlassian tools "in a large scale with massive uptake".

What: Presentation – a talk by Nick Zeeb (a core Java developer at LMAX Exchange) about how test-driven design was used to create a lock-free, high performance data structure.

6-8 September - OpenStreetMap - Birmingham

State of the Map 2013 – the 7th edition of the official OpenStreetMap conference State of the Map (SotM).
