AVM and Cybits in court over GPL
At the hearing before the regional court in Berlin on Tuesday, AVM, maker of the Fritzbox router, and Cybits , maker of the "Surf-Sitter" filtering software, faced off before the judge. In an ongoing legal dispute which began in January 2010, AVM is trying to stop Cybit modifying its Linux-based firmware in the Fritzbox device. The Free Software Foundation Europe believes this is a violation of the GPL. The court has not presented a ruling.
At the trial, it was less about licences and more about questions of trademark law, whether a router is a closed system or a computer on which additional software can be installed. A detailed report on the positions of the parties and their day in court is available in an article on The H, Battle lines drawn in dispute between AVM, Cybits and FSFE.
