Advance updates for CentOS 6.1

The CentOS team has set up a continuous release (CR) package repository; this enables CentOS 6.0 users to obtain packages forming components of the as yet unreleased CentOS 6.1. These include updated software which fixes bugs or resolves security vulnerabilities which have long been corrected in Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), on which CentOS is based. In their announcement regarding the CR repository, the development team are unequivocal in advising users to activate this repository via release RPMs for x86-32/ix86 and x86-64/x64 systems.

CentOS set up a similar repository for CentOS 5.6 in mid-August, to provide users with advance updates from RHEL clone CentOS 5.7, which was released in mid-September. The CentOS development team vaguely promised a CR repository for version 6.0 when it announced the first 6.x version. The announcement that details of the CR repository would be released within 48 hours raised expectations of a far more rapid CR repository appearance. However, the announcement of the CR repository for 6.0 does not give any hint of a release date for CentOS 6.1. Oracle and Scientific Linux released their RHEL 6.1 clones several weeks ago.
