The latest figures from Google show that the share of Android devices running version 4.0 or later is slowly expanding. At the beginning of January, nearly 40% of Android devices that accessed the Google Play Store were running a 4.x version. Over January that grew to 42.6% with Android 4.0 "Ice Cream Sandwich" slightly down at 29% and Android 4.1 and 4.2 "Jelly Bean" up from 10.2% to 13.6%.

The share for the stalwart Android 2.3 "Gingerbread" dropped from 47% to 45.6% though at this rate it'll be over two and a half years before the popular smartphone-oriented version of Android disappears from the Android market share figures. Its predecessor, Android 2.2 "Froyo" is still around though with an 8.1% share, down from January's 9%. On the upside for Google, it'll only be a few months before Android 4.x takes over as the dominant version of Android with a higher percentage share of the Android market than 2.3.

Google has yet to update its screen size data and OpenGL version information in its statistics release. The last time it was updated was at the start of October 2012. Whether this is because analysts have used the screen data to reverse-engineer tablet sales figures or because Google is only going to occasionally sample that data is not known at this time.
