Arch Linux 2009.02 released

The Arch development team have released new installation images of Arch Linux 2009.02, which uses the 2.6.28 kernel. Arch Linux is a simple and lightweight Linux distribution for i686 and x86-64 platforms that includes support for the ext4 filesystem. Installations can also be done on an ext4 root partition and the release comes with rescue and maintenance capabilities for ext4 root partitions.

The new AIF (Arch Linux Installation Framework) installer, although currently considered to be "under development", is included. The distribution is aimed at Linux users who want to create "their own ideal environment" and want to install only what they need, or desire. Arch Linux is developed under the rolling-release principle, using small and frequent updates, so that there is no need for regular re-installation of the OS. Arch Linux uses its own Pacman package manager, which is similar in operation to apt-get (Debian / Ubunutu) or zypper (openSUSE). The next release will be based on 2.6.29 and will focus on fixing any open bugs.
