Arch Linux 2010.05 arrives
The Arch Linux developers have announced the release of the project's official 2010.05 installation images. Arch Linux is a simple and lightweight Linux distribution for i686 and x86-64 platforms aimed at Linux users who want to create "their own ideal environment" and install only what they need.
According to Release Engineer Dieter Plaetinck, the latest 2010.05 release features the 2.6.33.4 Linux kernel and updated ISO files (isohybrid) that can be burned to CDs and to other media, such as USB flash drives. Other changes include support for Virtio and PXE booting, Memtest updates and a number of bug fixes over the previous 2009.08 release. Plaetinck also notes that the AIF (Arch Linux Installation Framework) installer includes several updates and that "more than half of the packages in core are now xz compressed".
More details about the release can be found in the release announcement and a list of updated packages are available on the project's wiki. Arch Linux 2010.05 is available to download as an ISO image file for 32 and 64-bit systems and an official installation guide is provided. Arch Linux and its components are released under a variety of licenses.
