Ariba has today released its AribaWeb RIA development framework under Version 2.0 of the Apache license. Ariba specialise in "Spend Management" solutions, software and services to manage corporate spending. Its customers include Cisco Systems and Hewlett-Packard. AribaWeb is an open source, component-based, web application development framework, for creating rich, AJAX-enabled applications, with the absolute minimum amount of code. Originally, starting in 1999, it was only used by Aribia, Inc. in its applications, but was quietly released as open source in May of 2008. Active promotion of the project has only started this month.

AribaWeb has four main features including AutoAJAX to automatically produce interfaces. InstantApp technology is used, so that users don't have to maintain their own interface code. Life Edit and X-Ray is used so developers can see how their code works as it runs and Full Stack is used for developing business database applications.

AribaWeb supports Groovy and Ariba claim that an application written in Rails will have 100 times as many lines as the same application, written in AribaWeb. Bhaskar Himatsingka, Ariba CTO, stated that "With the open source release of AribaWeb, we see the opportunity to give back to the community in a significant way." More details can be found on the AribaWeb site and AribaWeb version 5 is available to download now.
