Asterisk logo One year after releasing Asterisk 1.8 – a Long Term Support (LTS) release with four years of support – Digium has released version 10 of its telephone system software. (From this version, the preceding '1.' has been removed from the version number.) One of the biggest changes in Asterisk 10 is the introduction of the "wide-band media engine", which replaces the old telephony-grade media engine, and according to the company, permits "studio-quality audio and a nearly unlimited number of codecs". According to Digium, this dispenses with the need for special hardware requiring high quality audio connections.

The new codecs in Asterisk 10 include Skype's SILK codec and a 32 kHz Speex codec. Digitisation of audio is no longer limited to 8 or 16 kHz; Asterisk now supports sampling rates of up to 192 kHz. MeetMe has been replaced with a new conference application called ConfBridge, which promises better sound quality and video functionality.

At the time of writing, the Asterisk download page has yet to be updated and still lists 10.0 Beta 2, which was released at the end of September. Asterisk is licensed under the GPLv2.
