Berkeley DB Java Edition Release 4, from Oracle, brings replication to Oracle's open source, embeddable, key-value database. The 100 per cent Java implementation of Berkeley DB is now capable of having a single master database which distributes its data to multiple read-only database nodes. A guide to the replication capabilities is available on Oracle's site.

Version 4 also brings two plug-ins for monitoring applications running Berkeley DB; one for non-replicated and one for replicated servers. The plug-ins expose JMX MBeans and can be viewed with JConsole, using a separately supplied plug-in for the monitoring console.

The on-disk format used by Berkeley DB Java Edition has changed in version 4.0; it is capable of reading databases created by version 3.3 and earlier, but earlier versions will not be able to read databases created by version 4.0.

Berkeley DB Java Edition is licensed under the Open Source Licence for Oracle Berkeley DB Java Edition.
