Bossie Awards

InfoWorld has presented its 2011 Bossie (Best Open Software Source) Awards. Prizes were awarded in the four categories of enterprise open source applications, desktop and mobile software, data centre and cloud solutions, and developer tools.

The six server applications that received awards include the Drupal content management system, the OpenBravo ERP solution, and customer relationship management program SugarCRM, which had already received a Bossie Award last year. In the new category of desktop and mobile applications, LibreOffice, VirtualBox, Google's Android mobile OS, the Pidgin IM client, and the VLC media player were among those that received one of the 11 awards.

The awards for cloud and data centre solutions went to Xen, Eucalyptus and OpenStack, among others. The category of developer tools contains a total of nine new prize winners, including Apache Hadoop, the Git revision control system, Node.js and the Jenkins fork of the Hudson continuous integration system. The last two already have experience with awards this year; at the end of July, they also received an Open Source Award from O'Reilly at the OSCON Conference.
