Bytemark calls on hosting companies to support Geary development
Matthew Bloch, co-founder of hosting service Bytemark, has taken to his company's blog to call on his colleagues and competitors in the web hosting business to support the Yorba Foundation's fundraising efforts for its Geary email client. According to Bloch, the decline in the quality of open source email clients is hurting the web hosting industry as it continues to lose customers who prefer to use web applications like Gmail or in-house solutions like Exchange that are not hosted by traditional web hosting companies. Furthermore, he argues that, as they built a large part of their business on open source technologies, hosting companies should support open source projects when possible.
Yorba's campaign for Geary on Indiegogo currently has seven days left to raise over $70,000 or the foundation will not be able to fund further development on the program. Bytemark has pledged $2,500 of the approximately $30,000 that has already been raised and is calling on other hosting providers to join in. In his blog post, Bloch says: "Yorba simply want to put beautiful, functional, software out there, for free, with no strings attached, and with no plans to lock away the best features for paying customers", adding that: "Geary will help us all to sell more servers, and to grow our industry on open standards, not limited interoperability with giants."
