Canonical and Inktank get closer on storage

Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, and Inktank, the company behind the open source distributed storage technology Ceph, have announced a collaboration which will result in an integrated and supported implementation of Ceph for OpenStack on Ubuntu. Ceph offers object and block storage for cloud platforms and has been available on Ubuntu for some time. The new arrangement means that customers of Canonical's Ubuntu Advantage Cloud will also get Inktank-backed support for Ceph.

Ceph will be delivered to Ubuntu users alongside Canonical's OpenStack releases through the company's repositories. Packages can be deployed and managed using Juju. The focus for the support and integration work will be the long-term-support edition Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, with software delivered as part of the Ubuntu Cloud Archive updates.

The collaboration is an extension of an existing partnership between the two companies, which has its roots in Canonical founder Mark Shuttleworth's $1 million investment in Inktank in 2012. Since then, SUSE has signed up for a Ceph/OpenStack support deal and Inktank has enhanced Red Hat support in Ceph.
