Canonical launches Ubuntu App Showdown

Canonical, the company behind the Ubuntu Linux distribution, has announced the Ubuntu App Showdown, a contest calling on developers to submit original applications for inclusion in the Ubuntu repositories. Applications will be judged by a panel of five, including Ubuntu Community Manager Jono Bacon, with the winners receiving laptops and smartphones as prizes.

Applications will have to be sent in by 9 July and have to be submitted to the Ubuntu Software Centre. An initial requirement to use the Python-based Quickly development environment was quickly dropped by the competition organisers. The two winners of the contest will each receive a laptop made by System76 and a Nokia N9 smartphone, while the third winner will receive an N9 only. Additionally, there will be a community vote with the developers of the three most voted apps also receiving smartphones.

Alongside the contest, Canonical is running several online workshops that are aimed at teaching attendees about application development using Python and Quickly. An FAQ on the Ubuntu App Developer site includes further information about the contest and the company encourages participants to ask questions on the Ask Ubuntu service if they run into problems during development.
