Citrix fully open sourcing Cloud.com tools
Citrix has announced it is fully open sourcing the platform behind Cloud.com – CloudStack. Citrix acquired Cloud.com in July. The Java-based platform has been largely available as open source for some time, but the company maintained two codebases, one for paying customers and one for open source customers; now the company will have only one codebase with the entire system available under the GPLv3. The software, which can be found on cloudstack.org, supports VMware, XenServer, Xen Cloud Platform and KVM and Oracle VM.
The most recent release of the software has added support for VMware 5/vSphere 5 virtual machines, Oracle VM and bare metal provisioning (hosts with no hypervisor). The CloudStack developers are also committed to converging features between CloudStack and OpenStack; they are currently integrating OpenStack Storage with CloudStack. The aim is to use OpenStack as part of the CloudStack stack, with CloudStack adding features. The new features are available in a preview release of CloudStack 2.2.11 which is available to download from the project's site.
