Apache Cordova Logo A year ago the Nitobi developers and Adobe contributed the PhoneGap software to the Apache Software Foundation to incubate as the Apache Cordova project; now the foundation has graduated the mobile development platform as a top level project. The news came from the project's Twitter feed, but the project's web site has not yet been updated to reflect the new status. This isn't unusual as the graduation vote by the ASF's board merely signals that the project can announce its new status in its own time.

With Cordova, it is possible to create native mobile applications using HTML, CSS and JavaScript. The Cordova runtime serves as a container for mobile web applications and provides its own interfaces to access native system capabilities. Completed applications can be delivered as a native package for different target platforms. Adobe went on to acquire Nitobi and now offers a chargeable build service for Cordova/Phonegap applications that simplifies deployment further by creating native packages for iOS, Android, Windows Phone, Blackberry 5/6/7, webOS and Symbian.
