CyanogenMod 10.1 rolls out to some devices

The CyanogenMod team is making more images for the latest version of their open source custom ROM for Android devices available. CyanogenMod 10.1 is based on Android 4.2 "Jelly Bean" and has been in development since Google open sourced that version of the operating system last month. New nightly builds of CyanogenMod 10.1 are now available for the Samsung Galaxy S, S II, S III and tablets such as the Asus Transformer Pad Infinity and both versions of the Galaxy Tab 2.

Several devices that are already running Android 4.2 as their stock operating system, such as the Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4 and the Nexus 7 and 10 tablets, also have nightly builds available of the new CyanogenMod version. The new Android 4.2 based images bring changes to the notifications display such as changes to the system toggles in the window shade menu and improvements to CyanogenMod's Trebuchet launcher.

The CyanogenMod developers announced in a post on Google+ that they have already started to upgrade several devices via the over-the-air (OTA) update functionality built into CyanogenMod 10. Some users reported problems with the clock application crashing after the update, but the developers say that this can be fixed by navigating to the Clock application in the Settings ➤ Apps menu and clearing its data. For devices that did not receive the OTA update, experimental nightly builds can be downloaded from CyanogenMod's mirror network.

The H reminds users that, as with all custom firmware, inexperienced users are advised not to flash their devices as they could unintentionally "brick" them, resulting in a complete loss of functionality.
