CyanogenMod 10 brings over-the-air updates

The CyanogenMod project has released the first stable version of CyanogenMod 10 (CM10), based on Android 4.1 "Jelly Bean". The latest version of the most popular alternative ROM for Android devices includes many features from Jelly Bean, as well as some custom developments by the CyanogenMod team, such as a new update manager and tweaks to the user interface. Furthermore, the developers have detailed their plans for integrating Google's changes from Android 4.2, which was open sourced yesterday.

The project's mirrors don't currently include CM10 images for all supported devices as the developers are still in the process of building them, but the missing images should appear within the next few hours. In the latest version, CyanogenMod is switching to a new update manager that allows users to receive subsequent updates over the air without using a third-party application such as ROM Manager.

In the announcement, the developers say that they are already looking at the changes introduced in Android 4.2 and are planning to incorporate them into a future CyanogenMod 10.1 release. This would potentially allow users of devices such as the Nexus S to get access to features from Android 4.2, as Google has announced that not all devices will receive an update based on version 4.2.

CyanogenMod 10 is available from the project's mirrors. A list of supported devices can be found on the CyanogenMod web site. The H reminds users that, as with all custom firmware, inexperienced users are advised not to flash their devices as they could unintentionally "brick" them, resulting in a complete loss of functionality.
