Developer Break: Node.js, Apaches and Celery

Developer Break – catching the smaller but important changes and updates to tools and specifications, utilities and libraries:

• With two new releases and a new site for the npm package manager, the Node developers have been busy. Node.js 0.8.2 was released with fixes and updates to the most current stable branch of the JavaScript-based server-side framework. The previous stable branch, now in maintenance mode, also received an update with the release of Node.js 0.6.20 with some backported improvements and fixes. These include an upgrade to npm which is having its web presence updated from the older courier type look to a slicker, easier to use version, with user accounts among other new features.

• Apache developers have also been busy. An update of Commons IO to version 2.4 added some features and fixes including correctly defining how big a yottabyte is. Another small update arrived in the form of Apache Tomcat 7.0.29 fixing some regressions and adding support for a default error page. The Apache HTTPComponents project also got a minor update to version 4.2.1 to "address a number of issues". According to the release notes, that number is eight.

• There was also an update for Apache Sling's POST servlets module to fix a DoS vulnerability.

• Celery, the asynchronous distributed task queue/job queue framework for Python, received a major update with Celery 3.0, with a "new and improved API", a new RabbitMQ client and many other improvements to BSD (3-clause) licensed software.

• Previously mentioned on The H, version 2.0 of the mobile JavaScript application tool Wakanda got its production release with the AGPLv3/GPLv3 licensed platform.
