EclipseCon 2010: Virgo and Gemini to be accepted into EclipseRT
At the EclipseCon 2010 conference, which runs from the 22nd to the 25th of March, the Eclipse Foundation has announced that the Eclipse Virgo and Eclipse Gemini projects have been accepted to join the Eclipse runtime (EclipseRT). According to the foundation, the "two projects provide important functionality required by organisations building enterprise solutions", adding that "both projects represent important milestones in the continued growth of the EclipseRT community".
The Virgo project, also known as the "Dynamic Enterprise Application Platform" project, is lead by VMware subsidiary SpringSource. The project is a modular runtime platform that's based on Equinox and OSGi and supports server-side enterprise applications deployed as OSGi bundles. The Gemini project, also called the Enterprise Modules Project, is backed by Oracle, as well as SpringSource. Its goal is to provide open source reference implementations of specific OSGi Alliance Enterprise standards.
