"End of Life" for Ruby 1.8.6

In May 2009, application hosting company Engine Yard took over the maintenance of Ruby 1.8.6, the older branch of the Ruby language, in order to provide security and bug fixes for the version. Now, after nearly two and a half years, Engine Yard has announced that it will be ending that support. Engine Yard's Kirk Haines, who led the maintenance duties for 1.8.6, announced at July's RubyKaigi that, after one more release (within two months) of 1.8.6, he would no longer be supporting that version.

Ruby 1.8.6 was originally released in March 2007. Engine Yard says no action is needed by its customers and is advising its 1.8.6 users to consider Ruby 1.8.7 or 1.9.2. It notes, though, that 1.8.7 is expected to go into "support only" maintenance in the summer of 2012 and that they have moved to Ruby 1.9.2 as their default run-time.
