FSF announces Free Software Awards winners

The Free Software Foundation (FSF) has announced the winners of this year's Free Software Awards. The annual awards recognise an individual and one project for their contributions to the progress and development of free software.

John Gilmore, one of the founders of Cygnus Solutions and a co-founder of the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), won this year's award for the Advancement of Free Software. Gilmore, who also gave a presentation at the conference on the future goals of the free software movement, said that, "Free software has been very good to me, and I'm glad that I have been good to it."

The Award for Projects of Social Benefit was presented to the Internet Archive, a non-profit organisation that is working to build a library of digital versions of items of cultural and historical interest. The Internet Archive has been archiving on the web since 1996. To date, for example, it has collected hundreds of thousands of live concert recordings which are all freely available online in lossless formats.

The award winners were selected by a committee chaired by Suresh Ramasubramanian, Head of Anti-spam at IBM LotusLive iNotes division. The winners were honoured at a ceremony on the 20th of March, held during the 2010 LibrePlanet conference at Harvard Science Center in Cambridge, which ran from the 19th to the 21st of March.
