Final GNOME 3.6 update improves stability
The second update to the 3.6.x series of GNOME has been released by the project's developers to further improve the stability of the popular open source Linux and Unix desktop environment. As expected at this stage, the maintenance update has only minor changes including bug fixes and module and translation updates.
The new release includes numerous fixes and tweaks to the GNOME Shell, the Nautilus file manager and the GNOME Control Center apps. Changes to the NetworkManager include fixes for multiple issues that caused it to crash when, for example, a VLAN interface was removed. The Empathy IM and VoIP client further improves GNOME Online Account integration and fixes several call-related bugs. A list of updated modules and changes can be found in the core and apps NEWS files.
GNOME 3.6.2 will be the final 3.6.x branch release as the developers shift their focus to the next major release of the desktop, GNOME 3.8. Among the proposed features are support for automatic extension updates, notification filtering on a per-application basis, and integration of application search and ownCloud.
Earlier this month, the project's release team confirmed that fallback mode functionality would be removed in the new branch of GNOME. The first unstable development snapshot of what will become version 3.8 was published at the end of August; the next development release, GNOME 3.7.2, is planned for 19 November. The final version of GNOME 3.8 is scheduled to be released in late March next year.
