Network globe Mozilla's open source Firefox web browser has once again retained the number two rank in global desktop browser share behind Internet Explorer. According to the latest numbers from NetMarketShare, IE's market share remained about the same at 54.02%, while Firefox's market share increased from 19.71% in May to 20.06% for the month of June.

Following previous NetMarketShare reports, it was believed that Firefox would likely relinquish its second place position to Google's open-source-based Chrome browser last month. Firefox's increase appears to have come at the expense of Chrome, which saw a decline, dropping from 19.58% to 19.08%. Safari (4.73%) and Opera (1.60%) rounded out the top five most popular browsers for June.

As with any market share statistics, these numbers are not definitive, as they are created from different samples of sites around the web. They do, however, offer an insight into the trends in the browser market. In May, for example, StatCounter's numbers showed that Chrome passed IE in global browser share with 32.76% compared to IE's 31.94% share.
