Apache Flex logo The incubating Flex project at the Apache Software Foundation has produced its first release of the rich internet application (RIA) framework under the guidance of the foundation. The Flex 4.8.0 release adds no features and fixes no bugs, though; it is focussed on being a "parity" release with Flex 4.6.0. Flex 4.6.0 was the last official release of the Flex SDK before it was contributed to the Apache Software Foundation and the Flex community by Adobe.

Flex was accepted into the Apache Incubator in December 2011. Since then the project has been working on migrating the code to Apache servers, placing it under the Apache licence and migrating bugs and problems to Apache's JIRA system. The developers have also been integrating a donated test suite and making the build system easier to use. FlexUnit is also in the process of being donated to Apache and the project.

Projects at Apache go through an incubation phase where, as a "podling", the governance and processes of the project are brought into line with the expectations of the Apache Software Foundation, known as "The Apache Way". Source and binary versions of Apache Flex 4.8.0 are available to download. More information on the underlying changes is available in the release notes and instructions on how to use it are in the README file.
