First GNOME 3.6 update released

The GNOME Project has released the first update to version 3.6 of its open source Linux and Unix desktop environment. GNOME 3.6.1 is a maintenance update that includes a variety of minor changes, improvements and translation updates.

Among these are fixes to prevent GNOME Settings from crashing, updates to the Evolution mail client that correct signature problems and changes to prevent the Empathy IM client from connecting to accounts with invalid certificates. In addition to fixes for print preview in landscape mode, the gedit text editor improves the file browser side panel. The developers have already started work on the next major release of the desktop, GNOME 3.8. Proposed changes and features for the new version include support for notification filtering on a per-application basis, integrated application search and ownCloud integration, as well as the removal of the fallback mode implemented with the release of GNOME 3.0.

Support for automatic extension updates to make it easier for users to access newer versions of GNOME Shell Extensions installed via the extensions.gnome.org web site, which first launched late last year, has also been proposed. According to the current release schedule, GNOME 3.8 is expected to arrive in late March of next year.
