Apache Flex logo The developers at the Flex project have announced the version 1.0-incubating release of their installer for the Flex rich internet application (RIA) framework. The Apache Flex SDK Installer is an Adobe AIR application that is designed to simplify the process of downloading and installing the Apache Flex SDK itself, as well as easily transition from older versions of the SDK to the latest release.

In addition to downloading and installing the latest Flex SDK release, the installer also downloads its dependencies including the AIR SDK for Windows or Mac OS X, Adobe Flash Player playerglobal.swc, SwfObject, the Open Source Media Framework (OSMF), and the Adobe Text Layout Format (TLF). It can also optionally download and install Adobe BlazeDS and Embedded Font Support.

While the release announcement states that the application includes auto-update functionality that should prompt users to upgrade to the latest version, the project's homepage still advises users who previously installed a pre-release version of the Flex SDK Installer to uninstall it prior to using the new version in order to prevent an AIR error caused buy mis-matched certificates.

An overview and instructions how to use the software can be found in the README file. The incubating 1.0 release of the Apache Flex SDK Installer is available to download as source or as binaries for Windows and Mac OS X from the project's site. Flex and the Flex SDK Installer are licensed under version 2.0 of the Apache Licence.
