Former MySQL CEO to become Eucalyptus Systems CEO
Marten Mickos, former MySQL AB CEO and Senior Vice President of the database group at Sun Microsystems, has been named as the Chief Executive Officer for Eucalyptus Systems. Discussing Eucalyptus Systems, Mickos says that the company "has a brilliant team, highly sophisticated open source technology, and an early lead in a market with a massive global opportunity – all the ingredients for major impact”.
Eucalyptus is an acronym for "Elastic Utility Computing Architecture Linking Your Programs To Useful Systems". The company's open source software allows for the implementation of cloud computing within a data centre by providing an Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) solution that is compatible with Amazon Web Services (AWS), including Amazon's Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), Simple Storage Service (S3) and Elastic Block Store (EBS).
Mickos was the CEO in charge of the database group at MySQL before it was acquired by Sun Microsystems for $1 billion in 2008, after which he became the Senior Vice President of Sun's Database Group. In the spring of 2009 Mickos decided to leave Sun to take on new challenges. He currently holds positions on the board of directors for RightScale, Mozilla Messaging and Electrosonic. Mickos replaces Eucalyptus CEO Woody Rollins, with Rollins moving into position as the company's chief financial officer (CFO).
