FreeBSD Logo Originally expected to arrive on June 25th, the FreeBSD development team have issued a second release candidate (RC2) for version 8.1 of their popular free Unix derivative. The final release of FreeBSD 8.1, the first stable major point update to version 8.0 of FreeBSD from November of last year, is scheduled to arrive on the 9th of June, however, it's likely the RC1 and RC2 delays will push it back by approximately one week.

According to the developers, the second RC fixes a regression related to Atheros AR9280 cards being detected incorrectly, making them unusable. Assuming that no other issues are reported, the RC2 will likely become the final FreeBSD 8.1 release. As with all development releases, use of FreeBSD 8.1 RC2 in production environments and on mission critical systems is not advised. Users testing the release are encouraged to provide feedback and report any bugs that they encounter.

More details about the release can be found in the official release announcement and on the FreeBSD 8.1 Release Engineering wiki. FreeBSD 8.1 RC2 is available to download from one of the project's FTP mirrors.
