The FreeNAS developers have announced the availability of version 0.7 of FreeNAS (code named Khasadar), a FreeBSD-based Network-attached storage (NAS) UNIX-like server operating system. FreeNAS includes a full Web configuration graphical user interface (GUI) and supports the FTP, NFS, CIFS (Samba), AFP, rsync and iSCSI protocols and software RAID (0,1,5).

The latest release is based on FreeBSD 7.2 and now includes support for the ZFS (Zettabyte File System) file system. In addition to a number of bug fixes, the release also features several major changes and updates to the included components, such as Samba 3.0.37 and version 1.4.23 of the lighttpd web server. The Transmission BitTorrent client has been updated to version 1.72 and other additions include the ability to configure the login shell for a user and a user portal that allows a local user to login and change their password – all of which can be configured via the WebGUI.

More details about the release can be found in the Change Log. FreeNAS 0.7 is available to download for 32 and 64-bit systems. Once downloaded, it can be installed on a Compact Flash card, USB flash drive, hard drive or run as a LiveCD that saves the configuration file to a USB drive or floppy disk. FreeNAS is released under the BSD license.
