FreeNAS 8.0.4 updates Samba

The FreeNAS Project has announced the availability of a new stable release, version 8.0.4, of its open source FreeBSD-based network-attached-storage operating system. In the maintenance update to the 8.0.x branch of FreeNAS, Samba has been upgraded to version 3.6.3, fixing several bugs and addressing a security vulnerability that could be exploited by an attacker to cause a denial-of-service (DoS).

Other changes include new arcstat.py and arc_summary.py tools which were ported from FreeBSD, the addition of LSI's MegaCLI command line tool and a new .img suffix that will, its developers say, simplify mounting a disk image for Windows and Mac OS X users. Bugs affecting CIFS, iSCSI and the user interface have also been fixed.

FreeNAS 8.0.4 is available to download for 32- and 64-bit systems, and documentation is provided. Hosted on SourceForge, FreeNAS source code is released under the BSD licence and development is sponsored by iXsystems.

Work is continuing on FreeNAS to return support for home media functionality which existed in FreeNAS 7. The third party extensions, not bundled with the main ISO images, have also seen updates. These components include a new version of the Firefly media server (1696_6), which adds compatibility for iTunes 10.5.2 or later, and version 2.42 of the Transmission BitTorrent client. The functionality for these third party modules is still awaiting a GUI and plug-in packaging, ready for FreeNAS 8.2 where they are due to appear. Users who wish to try out the current, CLI-only, versions can use the FreeNAS 8.0.4 "multimedia" releases which are available to download.
