Freshmeat is now called Freecode

Freecode logo "The Freshmeat free software directory has changed its name to Freecode after more than fourteen years with the previous name. When trying to sell advertising space for the free, ad-financed software directory, the unusual name created problems for many years. To some advertising customers in the US, "Freshmeat" had a number of dubious connotations, and more problematically, people did not associated the name with free software or a software directory.

The switch was implemented over the weekend of 29 and 30 October, and the project's web servers are now redirecting freshmeat.net visitors to the new freecode.com domain.

Although the new name lends itself more towards a directory of free software, commercial projects continue to be welcome, and there are no plans to exclude them. However, site director Patrick Lenz pointed out that less than four per cent of the listed projects are available under a non-open source licence. Lenz said that he doesn't anticipate that these proportions will change.
