FuseSource acquired by Red Hat

Red Hat has announced that it is acquiring FuseSource. Operating as an independent subsidiary of database company Progress Software Corporation after it was spun off in 2010, FuseSource develops open source integration and messaging products. Red Hat hopes to integrate those products into its product line as part of its plans to deliver enterprise application integration products and services to its customers. Red Hat's exact plans for FuseSource products have not been revealed though, as there is some overlap with its existing products; it hopes to detail its plans later this summer. Terms of the deal have not been disclosed.

FuseSource's range of products is based around products from the Apache Software Foundation. The Fuse Services framework is based on the Apache CXF project, which is already used in the JBoss Enterprise Application Platform 6. The Fuse Message Broker is an implementation of Apache's ActiveMQ, and the Fuse Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) is a combination of the Apache ServiceMix enterprise bus, Apache Camel routing engine and Karaf OSGi runtime. FuseSource developers were active or had leading roles in the creation of many of the projects.

ESB and other integration products are seen as critical to future cloud developments, allowing easier interconnection of the various distributed elements of a cloud-based application. Red Hat's acquisition will bring a lot of expertise to the company which is focusing on delivering cloud-enabled middleware and platforms.
