GSM Arduino calls in to the cloud

The Arduino board adds GSM and a SIM card to the popular prototyping platform

Cloud service provider Cumulocity is presenting an Arduino board with a GSM module designed for mobile communications at the Embedded World conference in Nuremberg, from 26 to 28 February. A Foca FTDI adapter adds serial access for programming and a light sensor for DIY projects are also included, along with an M2M SIM card from Deutsche Telekom to enable sending data over GSM to the cloud. The Arduino Cumulocity M2M Kit is due out in the second quarter of 2013 and should be able to be pre-ordered for €89 from Deutsche Telekom's developer web site; details of the ordering process are yet to be announced.

An Arduino SDK from Cumulocity provides application access to the cloud. Developers can sign up for the free-of-charge version of Cumulocity's cloud service and then, if necessary, upgrade for a fee, with the entry edition plan costing €2.50 a month for 400MB of storage and 20,000 requests.

The SDK provided by Cumulocity allows connections to internet services such as Twitter, Facebook and IFTTT via REST-API. The Arduino library for the Cumulocity client is open source and available under the MIT Licence.
