Gnash 0.85 release

Gnash logo The developers of Gnash, the GPL3 licensed SWF player, have released version 0.8.5 as their fourth beta release. Gnash currently supports many of SWF version 7's features and has growing support for SWF8 and SWF9. The new version of Gnash uses MIT-SHM, Shared Memory Extensions, and XVideo to improve performance and has added support for saving all streamed media to disk. Other improvements include support for new codecs to keep YouTube support up to date, basic error messages when media decoding fails, scaled video smoothing and a new GUI for KDE4/Qt4.

The release also sees the introduction of Cygnal media server, in an alpha form. Cyngal is a sub project of Gnash that plans to offer audio and video media streaming which will handle thousands of simultaneous connections and is designed to support being run on large Linux clusters. Gnash can be run as a standalone player or as a plug-in for Firefox, Mozilla and Konquerer. It runs on many Linux distributions, FreeBSD, NetBSD and Open BSD, and supports non-x86 and 64 bit processors. Binaries and source code are available from the getgnash.org web site.
