Google Summer of Code 2010: Student statistics published

Source: Google Google has published a statistical breakdown of the students accepted to participate in this year's Google Summer of Code (GSoC) event. Each year Google seeks students and mentors from the FLOSS community to take part in it's annual GSoC event, which takes place over a period of three months.

According to a post on the Open Source at Google blog by OS program manager Carol Smith, the final total of 1,026 students includes participants from 69 countries worldwide, down from 81 last year. The top three countries are the United States with 197 students participating, followed by India at 125 and Germany with 57. The top five countries are rounded out by Brazil (50) and Poland (46). The UK came in eighth with 36, behind Canada (40) and China (39) and was followed by France (35) and Sri Lanka(34).

Smith notes that 145 of GSoC 2010 student participants also participated in last year's event and says that all of "the students have been getting to know their mentors and organisations". The community bonding period, during which the students will become familiar their organisations processes, developer interactions and codes of conduct, will end on the 24th of May, when the coding will officially begin.
