Google Summer of Code 2012: mentoring application deadline announced

Open source projects and organisations have until Friday, 9 March at 23:00 GMT to apply to mentor students as part of this year's Google Summer of Code (GSoC) event. Projects interested in applying can register (sign in required) for the eighth annual event now; application requirements can be found on the FAQ page and a Mentor Manual is provided.

Each year since 2005, Google has offered university students stipends to write and develop code for various open source projects as part of its GSoC event, which takes place over a period of three months. Google says that over the past seven years, 6,000 students from more than 90 countries have completed the GSoC program. Last year, over 1,100 university students participated by writing code for 175 open source organisations, 50 of which were new to GSoC. Further information about the program can be found on the Google Summer of Code 2012 site. A final list of accepted organisations will be posted on 16 March, at which point, Google notes, students can reach out to these projects to discuss their ideas. According to the Program Timeline, Google will begin accepting student applications on 26 March.
