Google Summer of Code 2012 wraps up

Google has officially ended its 2012 Summer of Code (GSoC) event by announcing that just over 88% of students have passed their evaluations. This number is still expected to rise over the coming weeks as students pass delayed evaluations. According to the company, 1212 university students from 69 countries took part in the eighth incarnation of the annual event.

Each year, the Google Summer of Code brings together students and mentors from companies and organisations within the free software and open source communities to develop code which is in turn placed under an open source licence. The event takes place over a period of three months during which students receive stipends and are tutored by their mentors to work within the projects they are assigned to.

The success rate of 88% this year mirrors last year's success rate, while the total number of participating students has increased slightly. 2008's Summer of Code still holds the record for most accepted students while 2010's overall success rate of 89% was the highest so far. Generally, the program has been steadily growing in both number of students participating as well as in its overall scope and budget.

Now that the event has concluded, Google is expecting that the participating mentor organisations will provide links to code repositories and code samples on the Summer of Code site soon. An overview of past GSoC statistics is provided on the Program Information for Past Years page.
