IBM to offer Hadoop in its cloud

IBM has announced that it will be offering InfoSphere BigInsights, its Apache Hadoop-based analytics software, as a service on the IBM SmartCloud platform. The service will be available both as a basic, free service and a pay-for enterprise level service – IBM says it should be possible for anyone to be "up and running in less than 30 minutes". The free service is designed to allow users who are new to "big data analytics" to learn how the process works. IBM recently acquired Hadoop specialists Platform Computing to enhance its expertise in the field.

Apache Hadoop has become the open source standard in "big data", implementing a MapReduce algorithm to harness the power of large clusters of machines to analyse large amounts of data. Originally developed at Yahoo, it became an Apache project and has developed its own ecosystem of tools and related technology. Earlier this month, Oracle announced that its Oracle Big Data Appliance would run Hadoop and Microsoft revealed plans to support Hadoop on its Azure cloud platform and Windows Server. Amazon's Elastic MapReduce cloud service is also based on Hadoop.
