JRuby boosted to 1.5.0

The developers of JRuby, the Ruby implementation for the Java Virtual Machine, have released JRuby 1.5.0. The new release is the product of nearly five months development work and it features improved performance, a native launcher for Unix-like platforms and Ant support. For users of JRuby 1.4.0, who've had a good experience, the developers say that 1.5.0 will be a "no-brainer upgrade".

The developers also encourage users who've previously tried applications with JRuby and found it an unsatisfying experience, to try again with 1.5.0, as, thanks to the fine-tuning and bug fixes that have been incorporated, they should find things easier. These include many fixes for Rails 3 support, improvements to start-up time, updated Ruby libraries (Ruby 1.8.7 standard library, RubyGems 1.3.5 and RSpec 1.3.0) and enhanced performance in Ruby-to-Java calling. In all, 1,250 commits have been made to the project's source code since the release of JRuby 1.4.0.

JRuby 1.5.0 is available to download, as source, binary or Windows executable. JRuby is tri-licensed under the CPL (Common Public Licence), GPLv2 and LGPLv2.1.
