Java SE 6 update 25 brings faster server startup
Oracle has released Java SE 6 Update 25 (6u25); this update contains no security updates to the Java runtime, but does include wider platform support with Windows 7 and SP1, Windows 2008 R2 with SP1, Oracle Linux 6 and Oracle Solaris 11 Express 2010.11 added to the supported list. Also supported by the update are Internet Explorer 8, Firefox 4, Google Chrome 10 and VirtualBox 4.
Java SE 6u25 includes version 20 of the Java Hotspot virtual machine which incorporates a new feature for the Server VM that uses "tiered compilation" to allow the server to start as quickly as the Client VM version. Other enhancements include a thirty per cent faster BigDecimal class (if -XX:+AggressiveOpts
is used) and a more efficient java.util.logging.LogRecord.
Although there are no security bug fixes, there are numerous other fixes in Java SE 6u25. Full release notes are available and the update can be installed using the built-in update functions or downloaded from the java.com web site. Although the Java source is under the GPLv2, Oracle's pre-built binary versions are under a proprietary licence.
