Java updates all round
Sun Microsystems have now released Java SE 6 update 12, after its early access debut in December. The new release provides support for 64 bit browsers, with a 64 bit version of the Java Plug-in and Java Webstart. Update 12 also claims improved application start up time with JavaFX based applications and better graphic performance when doing anti-aliased drawing, or non-anti-aliased wide lines. The release also contains a number of bug fixes, none of which are for security vulnerabilities. Full details are available in the release notes.
Meanwhile, the IcedTea project, which takes the OpenJDK6 source code to create a free Java implementation, has released IcedTea6 1.4. The new release has moved to a later OpenJDK6 build, and includes eleven security fixes. Other changes include the incorporation of the OpenJDK7 HotSpot JIT (just-in-time) compilation engine, XRender pipeline support to improve performance over remote X connections, support for HTTPS sites in the IcedTea plug-in and fixes to audio to "make Java play nicer with PulseAudio".
