Jolla signs distribution deal with Chinese retailer D.Phone
The Finnish mobile phone start-up Jolla, which has set out with the aim of revitalising commercial interest in the MeeGo platform, has signed a distribution contract with D.Phone, China's largest smartphone retail chain. Jolla, which does not seem to have a functioning web site, announced the deal through its corporate Twitter account. The agreement will enable Jolla to distribute its products through over 2,000 retail stores all over China.
In a press release, Jolla stated that it "will reveal its first product later this year." The company was created as part of Nokia's Bridge project that helps employees leaving the company to fund start-ups; it has been working on its first phone since 2011. Jolla's device is set to compete with the official successor to the MeeGo project, Tizen, which is being sponsored by Samsung and Intel. In any case, there is currently no commercial Tizen device on the market. Samsung has released a developer device running the OS, however.
Jolla has not communicated any more details on its first product or the exact nature of the distribution deal with D.Phone. The company also has not revealed what its version of the MeeGo operating system will look like.
