KDE SC 4.9 coming in August
The next major update to the KDE Software Compilation (KDE SC), version 4.9, is expected to arrive in early August 2012. According to the KDE Release Team, the new version of the open source K Desktop Environment, which is currently in development, will reach its soft feature freeze at the beginning of May, with the hard freeze taking place two weeks later.
The developers are currently anticipating two betas for KDE 4.9, the first of which is planned for 30 May with the second landing after a fortnight. These will be followed by two release candidates at the end of June and in mid-July. However, the team notes that all of these dates are subject to change should any major issues arise.
The full KDE 4.9 schedule is available on TechBase, the KDE project's developer wiki, as is a preliminary list of planned features. The current stable version is KDE 4.8 published in January – a new feature release with power management improvements, the Dolphin file manager and the Gwenview image viewer.
