Kolab Systems has released Kolab 3, the latest incarnation of their open source groupware server. Kolab 3 has been in development for quite some time and was originally expected to arrive in the third quarter of 2012. Kolab 2.4, released in May 2012, included a preview of some of the new features, including a new web interface based on the Roundcube email client, that supports mobile use on smartphones and tablets. Development of Roundcube is being funded by Kolab Systems.

A new web-based administration frontend uses Syncroton to handle iOS, Android and other clients through ActiveSync and includes an extensible server configuration API that allows administrators to manage resources, domains and roles. These improvements also make it easier to integrate the system in environments that already use a directory server. More information on the new storage formats the system supports and other changes can be found in the release announcement for Kolab 3.

Kolab 3.0 is packaged and available from a range of community package repositories, which include distribution-specific versions for Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, CentOS and Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Installation instructions are available on the project's documentation pages. Source code for the project is can be downloaded from its Git repository under various open source licences.
