Kolab 3 groupware enters alpha test

The developers of the Kolab groupware server have announced a first alpha release of version 3.0 of their software. The release is aimed at testers and early adopters and should not be used on production systems. Improvements in Kolab 3 are supposed to make it easier for the system to be integrated in environments that already include a directory server. The scalability and security of the software has also been improved.

The alpha version of Kolab 3 still supports OpenLDAP but now uses 389 Directory Server by default. Mobile devices can now be synchronised with Syncroton which is supposed to deliver better performance than the Z-push stack which it replaces. Additionally, Kolab's Web Administration Panel now includes options to administer resources, domains and roles.

The standard web client starting with this release is Roundcube, development on which is now being funded by Kolab Systems. The release of Roundcube 0.8 coincided with the alpha release of Kolab 3.
