LG Electronics becomes Linaro member

LG Electronics has joined the non-profit Linaro engineering organisation. As Linaro and LG announced today, the company will contribute resources to the organisation and "actively cooperate on new ARM technologies with other Linaro members."

Linaro was founded in 2010 by ARM, Freescale, IBM, Samsung, ST-Ericsson and Texas Instruments to support Linux implementations on the various ARM-based System-on-a-Chip (SoC) variants. LG is the newest member of the group which now includes seven companies alongside a number of partners. Within Linaro, engineers employed by members, partners and the organisation itself are working on improving many parts of the Linux stack for ARM devices. For example, Linaro engineers helped with the recent work within the Linux kernel to simplify the source tree for ARM Linux.

Linaro does not encompass all companies that produce and use ARM chips – one reason for this is the expense involved in providing engineering resources to the organisation – but LG is the third large mobile device manufacturer among its members.
